DisCovery Scenarios
Long Term Care, Hospital Campus', Senior Centers, and Retirement Communities
For the long-term care arena we see Disc Golf not only as a gateway to wellness through movement (for seniors) but also as a generational bridge. Imagine a grandparent is living in the nursing home. Recently he/she began to participate in a Disc Golf clinic at the residence. Even though they may be wheelchair bound, he/she can toss a disc and takes great joy in doing so with friends on the campus. Something even more inspirational occurs when the families come to visit. Now they can interact and play with “Grandma” and with the other families visiting their loved ones. A new community of younger people sharing experiences with older people in nursing homes develops right on the campus. Relatives of all ages will begin to enjoy visiting and participating. No one is ever alone, a generational bridge to wellness and palliative quality of life.
For the shorter term nursing home/assisted living/rehabilitative care patient, simply imagine the rewards associated with short-term rehabilitation performed outdoors. The benefit to individuals recovering from sports injuries (or any other injury for that matter) would be nothing short of inspirational. For so many in this position the lack of communal / outdoors rehabilitation and social interaction can prove frustrating. Getting these individuals outdoors, early in recovery, could be just the emotional boost necessary to speed recovery through physical and emotional wellness.
For Hospital Campus’ with the intention of expanding their reach into the community, clinics and course play can be used in a therapeutic setting for community groups such as AA, NA, disease management and support groups that already meet in hospital space or seek to utilize such space. Outreach can go so far as to allow the community to play at hospital sponsored courses or courses built on hospital grounds. This arrangement of community outreach for fun, recreation and wellness make the hospital a pro-active member of the community in addition to being a reactive medical center.
Veterans and V.A. Hospitals
For the brave men and women who have risked their lives in service to our country, therapeutic outdoor recreation can aid in their physical and emotional recovery. The personal physical and emotional consequences of war can begin to be off set when veterans re-learn to engage with each other, loved ones and friends. Activities that promote fun, enjoyment and personal acheivement are extremely helpful in the process. For Veterans Services seeking therapeutic recreation ,DisCovery " A Recreational Gateway to Wellness" is a hand up to our servicemen and women in need. Because Disc Golf can be played by virtually any one in any condition the program is accesible to returning veterans confined to wheel chairs, suffering form loss of limb, suffering from chronic stress and many other post traumatic and physical disabilities. It is a gateway to post conflict living.
Employer Groups
Concerned about the rising cost of medical insurance and medical delivery? So many employers are reducing their benefit programs in an effort to contain costs. At DisCovery we believe personal responsibility is a sustainable resource for growing a healthier population. Want to get better production, less sick leave and greater overall morale out of your work force? Corporate campus’ and parks are the ideal setting for disc golf courses and a round of play after work or on lunch hour can help to reduce stress and related illnesses, aid in weight management and function as a recreational gateway to employee wellness. A healthier population can serve to drive insurance costs down, clearly a win-win.
Community Parks and Recreation
Seeking an inexpensive way to bring your community out into the green spaces already provided? Consider Disc Golf. Its fun, easy to learn, draws families and Disc Golf enthusiasts into the community (where they spend their time and money), and is a “green” friendly activity. From a financial standpoint Disc Golf offers a win-win solution from a cost vs. benefit perspective as it is very inexpensive to install and maintain a disc golf course, and is inexpensive to play for participants.
Whether it’s Big Brothers / Big Sisters, YMCA’s, Boy / Girl Scouts, Rotary / Kiwanis, or local chambers of commerce, Disc Golf is a great recreational activity / sport for group outings. These could be team-building gatherings or they could be fund-raising events. But regardless, Disc Golf is a perfect activity to bring “kids” of all ages and skill levels together for passive outdoor recreation and fun.
Teachers and Students For so many educators, the inundation of paperwork and home life responsibility keeps them too busy to add a fitness regimen into their day. Teaching a Disc Golf clinic on campus not only benefits the teachers in terms of getting outdoors and moving, but also teaches skills that can be brought back to the classroom and shared in an educational venue that is fun and interesting. In fact there is a program specifically designed for education (E.D.G.E. – Education through the Disc Golf Experience). At DisCovery we feel educators can use Disc Golf for the at risk youth population (drug use, cutting, theft, social withdrawal). The possibilities are endless.
